Media Advisory: UAlbany, Albany Police Department, College of Saint Rose Promote Safety with Neighborhood Tour

ALBANY, N.Y. (September 10, 2008)What: Personal safety experts from the University at Albany, Albany Police Department, and the College of Saint Rose will take a late-night walk through student neighborhoods and talk to students from midnight Thursday, Sept. 11, to 2 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, about how students can maximize their personal safety.

Where:
The tour begins in front of the Albany Police Department's Center Station, 536 Western Ave., and will go through the Pine Hills and Beverwyck neighborhoods.
When:
Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008 from midnight to 2 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, 2008
Background:
The University at Albany, in its leadership role on the Committee on University & Community Relations, in cooperation with the Albany Police Department, the city of Albany, and residents/members of the Pine Hills and Beverwyck Neighborhood Associations, has welcomed back off-campus students by offering guidelines for good neighborhood behavior as part of a "Fifteen-Point Plan" to continue to make the off-campus environment safer and more secure for students and city residents. During the week of Aug. 18, three thousand (3,000) door tags entitled "How Safe Are You?" and "Arrests and Fines for Having a Party" were placed on residences in these neighborhoods. The publication highlights safety tips and describes the City of Albany and New York State laws and ordinances that could by violated as a result of a house party. In addition, during the week of Sept. 1, three thousand (3,000) brochures entitled "Off-Campus Student Survival Guide, How to be SAFER and a Better Neighbor" addressing behavior, safety and other off-campus student tenant issues were distributed.
