UAlbany Day October 25: The Capital Region's Passport to the World

ALBANY, N.Y. (October 14, 2008) -- The University at Albany will open its doors to the community for UAlbany Day on October 25 offering from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. dozens of faculty and student demonstrations, tours, a farmer's market, and an Andy Warhol photography exhibit. Afternoon events include a tailgate party, basketball scrimmage and homecoming football game. The event is designed to showcase how the University puts the world within reach.

"We want everyone to experience the rich array of learning that takes place at UAlbany," said Interim President George M. Philip. "Our campus is alive with science, technology, the arts, culture and athletics. We are proud to open our doors to the community and share all that UAlbany offers."

Throughout the day, UAlbany faculty will provide demonstrations in several areas, including archeology, atmospheric sciences, nanotechnology, forensics, and gun control. Associate Professor Sanjay Goel will offer advice on how to keep safe from computer viruses, spyware, phishing scams and Internet predators; Center for Language and International Director Robert Summers will allow participants to speak real time to people in France; and Cancer Researcher JoEllen Welsh will describe the role of Vitamin D in breast cancer prevention; among others.

As part of UAlbany's ongoing "Go Green" initiatives, Distinguished Teaching Professor John Delano will present "How to Develop a Green Home," which explores ways families can create healthy, more environmentally-conscious living spaces, while Professor Gary Kleppel offers a sheepherding demonstration. A Farmer's Market will feature products from eight local farms, including pasture-raised beef, fresh baked goods, fruits and vegetables and homemade jams. Proceeds will benefit the Northeast Food Bank.

The University will be conducting tours of the Life Sciences Building, the Observatory, the contemporary art exhibit in University Hall, the University Library and the Performing Arts Center. Visitors can get a sneak preview of the evening's dance performance at a dress rehearsal in the University theatre.

The University Art Museum will display a rarely seen collection of Andy Warhol photographs with its Andy Warhol: Portraits from the Warhol Photographic Legacy Program exhibit. It will feature 102 original Polaroids and 51 gelatin silver prints from a recent gift to the University Art Collection from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

UAlbany students will showcase their talents with several presentations, including a step show and the Honors College Student Musical Performance.

All of the events will lead up to UAlbany's homecoming football game against the St. Francis Red Flash, which will be followed by a grand fireworks display at University Field.

The day is free and open to the public. Faculty and student presentations begin at 10 a.m. and run through 2 p.m.
