UAlbany's Small Business Development Center Among Top Ten in Nation

ALBANY, N.Y. (May 5, 2009) -- The New York State Small Business Development Center (SBDC), based at the University at Albany, has been named among the top ten centers in the nation by the U.S. Small Business Administration. The center, part of UAlbany�s School of Business, was named the Region II winner for New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Center was recognized for the �innovative way it champions small businesses while providing programs and services for entrepreneurs.�
�Small businesses and entrepreneurs are the key engine of job growth and improvements in our economic performance,� said School of Business Dean Dr. Donald Siegel. �This award confirms what we've long known -- that UAlbany�s Small Business Development Center provides local entrepreneurs with the key advisement services they need to launch and sustain a profitable company."
"For 25 years, UAlbany's Small Business Development Center has helped startup and existing companies develop strategic business plans and identify funding sources,� said UAlbany SBDC director William Brigham. �The center�s goal is to provide Capital Region entrepreneurs with the facts and business acumen they need to help their organization succeed."
With the support of the U.S. Small Business Administration and the University at Albany, the UAlbany SBDC contributes to the local, regional, and state economies. The center is the state's leading provider of small business management and technical services. Since its inception in 1984, the UAlbany SBDC has provided business assistance to 17,263 entrepreneurs with 146,948 counseling hours, resulting in more than $224 million in economic investment and 8,586 created or saved jobs. In 2008, the economic investment of UAlbany SBDC clients exceeded $34 million.
