Saturday Morning Jazz Program Celebrates 20 Years on UAlbany's WCDB

Contact: Catherine Herman (518) 437-4980

ALBANY, N.Y. (April 14, 2005) -- April 2005 marks the 20th anniversary of the "The Saturday Morning Edition of Jazz," hosted by Bill McCann and heard on UAlbany’s WCDB, 90.9 FM.

McCann started the show, heard Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. until noon, in April 1985 as a junior at UAlbany. After graduation in May of 1986, he continued the show through graduate school at UAlbany, graduating in August of 1987. McCann continued the show through June of 1992, when he went to work at a law firm in Rockland County. The show continued each year during the summers of 1985 through 1991, and during the intersession between semesters during those years as well.

From June of 1992 until November of 1994, McCann came to Albany whenever he could on Saturday mornings to do the show, and has hosted the show every Saturday since late 1994. In addition of this month's 20th anniversary of the jazz show, December of this year will mark the 20th consecutive year of the Annual Saturday Morning Edition of Jazz Christmas Show. The Christmas show features classic holiday songs done by artists in a "jazzy" way.

In 1998 and 1999, McCann was named "Best Jazz DJ" by the local news and entertainment weekly Metroland.

"I can't believe 20 years of Saturday mornings have gone by. God willing, I hope they will let me continue my four-hour Saturday morning therapy session on WCDB for at least another 20 years," McCann said.

A 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. open house will be held at WCDB on Saturday, April 16, to celebrate the anniversary featuring refreshments and T-Shirt and CD give-aways. WCDB is on the uptown campus on the third floor of the Campus Center, Room 316.
