Professor Michael R. Werner was recently honored by Albany Mayor Gerald D. Jennings at a ceremony thanking him for his work as city archaeologist. Werner, who stepped down from the voluntary post in order to devote more time to his research in Roman Serbia, was recognized for his commitment to the study of local archaeology and for educating the public on the City of Albany's rich history.

A professor of classics and Mediterranean archaeology at UAlbany-SUNY, Werner is director of the Viminacium Archaeology Field School, a teaching excavation and research project at a Roman legionary base on the Danube in Serbia. His research, supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Science Foundation, and Smithsonian grants, and publications, have focused on the Balkan provinces of the Roman Empire for the last 30 years.
