UAlbany Senior Richard Bailey Remembered
It was an emotional tribute to Bailey, whose closest friends shared their thoughts about the sociology major and criminal justice minor during the vigil. Many more also reflected on their memories and moments spent with the Wantagh, N.Y. native.
Professors remembered Bailey as a great student, who had just taken the New York City police exam -- following in the footsteps of his father. Friends remembered him as someone who was always there for them. Others remembered him as someone who enjoyed playing video games and sports, who was easygoing and had a great sense of humor.
"No words can truly express the sadness and grief that the University community is experiencing at this time," said Interim President George M. Philip. "The sudden loss of this young member of our community is a devastating tragedy."
The somber vigil was punctuated by moments of silence, speeches and prayers. There were also gospel songs by Angelic Voices of Praise and tenor saxophonist Kevin Frison played the Irish classic tune "Oh, Danny Boy."
In the wake of the sudden death of its student, UAlbany is offering a series of "Safety Forums" to address safety concerns by students, faculty and staff. Upcoming forums will be held:
- Monday, October 27 at 7pm on Alumni Quad Movie Room (Alden Hall)
- Tuesday, October 28 at 8pm in the Campus Center Assembly Hall (2nd Floor)
- Thursday, November 6 at 4pm at the Arthur Levitt Room (between Milne and Page Halls)
Additionally, professional staff from Student Success will continue to be available to provide support to students.
