Brian Prather is a scenic designer for theatre, television, and other live events. With over one hundred productions to his credit, Brian’s work has been seen in a variety of venues from Off-Broadway, to an abandoned storefront in Tennessee, to the nationally run Chungmu Art Hall in Seoul, South Korea.
A selection of Brian’s Off-Broadway designs include Daniel’s Husband, Patrick Barlow’s new adaptation of A Christmas Carol, as well as premieres of The Burnt Part Boys, The Memory Show, Becoming Dr. Ruth, and others. Brian has worked with Off-Broadway companies and venues such as Primary Stages, Playwrights’ Horizons, Gingold Theatre Group, The Duke on 42nd, The Westside, New World Stages, Theatre Row, 59E59, and others.
Brian also designed the long-running Off-Broadway production of Freud’s Last Session. He has since designed the production for theatres in Detroit, Chicago, L.A. (starring Judd Hirsch and Tom Cavanagh) and a recent re-imagined production at the Alley Theatre in Houston, TX. The production in Chicago earned Brian a Jeff Award for Scenic Design.
Further afield, Brian designed the world premiere of the musical Minyeo-neun Goerowo in South Korea, based on the popular Korean film.
Beyond the theatre Brian has designed a variety of other projects. He is the production designer for the Connecticut Public Television live concert series “The Kate”, for which Brian was nominated for a regional Emmy Award. Brian has also designed several concerts for the band The Black Lillies, including the CD release event for their “Runaway Freeway Blues” national tour. Other projects of interest include the production design for the short film “Speck’s Last,” special event broadcasts for CPTV, and a special performance of Faust Symphony with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra with added original monologues.
Brian holds an MFA in Theatre Design from Brandeis University, is a member of United Scenic Artists Local 829, and is an Associate Artist at Barrington Stage Co.
