Carol Kim Appointed University at Albany Provost
The University at Albany has named Carol Kim provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. Kim, who was appointed after a national search, will join the University on August 1, 2019.
Kim currently serves as associate vice chancellor for Academic Innovation and Partnerships at the University of Maine System. Prior to her current position, she held a succession of academic and administrative positions at the University of Maine, including director of the Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering, vice president for research, and dean of the Graduate School.
Kim holds a bachelor of arts from Wellesley College and a Ph.D. in microbiology from Cornell University.
“Carol brings an extraordinary breadth of experience in higher education leadership in both the academic and research enterprises including the creation of innovative initiatives in enrollment management, academic programs, faculty development, research partnerships, and community relations,” said UAlbany President Havidán Rodríguez. “I am very confident that her innovative and impactful leadership will be a tremendous asset as we pursue our vision to be the nation’s leading diverse public research university.”
Kim joins UAlbany at a historic time as the University celebrates its 175th anniversary as the first state administered institution of higher learning in New York. Following the creation and implementation of a new strategic plan in 2018 focused on student success, research excellence, diversity and inclusion, internationalization, and engagement and service, the University is dedicated to providing the leaders, knowledge and innovations to create a better world.
“Carol is a talented researcher and academic who has helped the University of Maine and the University of Maine System be more responsive to state needs,” said James Page, chancellor of the University of Maine System. “From creating solution-based coalitions around Maine's challenges with aging to leading statewide efforts to increase the size and quality of our early college programs, Carol has led system-wide initiatives that have empowered our faculty, inspired our students, and served our citizens. We wish Carol all the best as she joins the University at Albany community.”
Kim will succeed Dr. Edelgard Wulfert who has served as interim provost since January 1, 2019. A steadfast and effective leader, Wulfert who most recently served as the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will continue to lend her leadership during the transitional period.
“I am honored to have been chosen to serve as the University at Albany’s next Provost. UAlbany transforms students’ lives which is what draws me to this vibrant, diverse university,” said Kim. “I look forward to working with President Rodríguez, his leadership team and the UAlbany community to continue to advance the University’s strategic priorities. My family and I are eager to join the UAlbany community and become Great Danes.”
