School of Public Health Earns Global Ranking in 2020

ALBANY, N.Y. (August 10, 2020) – The School of Public Health has been recognized as one of the best in the world by a new global ranking, placing it among the likes of Dartmouth, University of Minnesota, and Vanderbilt University.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also called the Shanghai Rankings, released the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2020 – Public Health last month. UAlbany’s School of Public Health is tied for 9th place of the U.S. public institutions ranked. On the overall list of 500 schools of public health from around the world, the School is tied for 51st with several well-known and highly-regarded institutions.

The ARWU for public health ratings calculates rankings based on research publications and impact, along with global partnerships – areas where the School of Public Health intentionally focuses significant efforts in line with the University at Albany's strategic plan. 

“The UAlbany School of Public Health provides defining experiences in public health,” says Dean David Holtgrave. “Through extensive applied learning, our students collaborate on research projects here in the Capital Region and around the world—projects that move public health forward and jumpstart our students’ careers.”

Holtgrave also notes that UAlbany’s partnership with the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) provides meaningful opportunities for the School.

“Our thirty-five year partnership with the Department of Health is truly invaluable,” he said. “Many NYSDOH scientists hold faculty appointments, collaborate with us on research and provide a wide variety of opportunities for students. Of note, recently our faculty and students have been working on groundbreaking COVID-19 research alongside NYSDOH, resulting in first-in-the-nation academic findings.”
