Margaret J. Reich, M.A.T.International programs complementing on-campus academic programs are open to students at all levels. As all regions of the world become more interdependent, it is imperative that a liberal education include an intimate knowledge of other cultures, both as preparation for responsible citizenship and a way to broaden the scope of career options.
State University of New York offers opportunities to study in most of the major regions of the world. Albany students register for Albany residence credit for any study abroad program administered by any State University center or four-year liberal arts college campus. (Students cannot register at Albany for study abroad programs administered by community, agriculture, or technology colleges.) A complete listing of programs and detailed information about them are available in the Office of International Programs, LI-66. Students in academic year programs will normally register for 15-18 credits per term.

Summer Programs Abroad
Albany-BraunschweigThe six-week Braunschweig program held in July and August offers beginning through advanced language courses. No prior knowledge of German is required. Excursions are an integral part of the program. Admitted students register for G Ins 210 for 6 credits.
Albany-Dominican Republic
A program with the National University P.H. Ureña. Spanish language study, Dominican culture taught in English, and a research project in business, government or education. Admitted students register for G Ins 331C for 1-9 credits per semester.
Albany-Iceland
A six-week program from mid-June through July in Arctic biology and geology, held in cooperation with the University of Iceland and Denmark's International Studies Program (DIS). Participants take courses in arctic marine and terrestrial biology. The program is open to juniors and seniors with a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and at least one year of college-level biology or one year of geology and one semester of chemistry. Admitted students register for G Ins 332 for 8 credits.
Albany-Korea
The seven-week program at Yonsei University offers Korean language courses at three levels and more than twenty-five courses in twelve disciplines taught in English. Admitted students register for G Ins 321C for 1-9 credits.
Albany-Russia
A six-week program held in June and July at Moscow State University, offers Russian language instruction at various levels. Admitted students register for G Ins 320C for 6 credits.
Albany-Würzburg
The ten-week Würzburg program held from late May through July offers intermediate through advanced language courses and courses taught in English on German and European history, economics, government and literature. Excursions are an integral part of the program. One year of college-level German or the equivalent is required. Prerequisite(s): 2.5 minimum overall cumulative average. Admitted students register for G Ins 214 for 10 credits.
Buffalo-Provence
Participants will study French in the morning and apply those lessons in the afternoon by shopping in the local markets and touring the Provence region. Students will have the opportunity to visit Roman and medieval structures, villages built by the Knights Templar and visit sites made famous by such artists as Matisse, Cezanne, Picasso and Van Gogh. Participants also have the option to take French language courses. Prerequisite(s): junior standing or above. Admitted students register for G Ins 348C for 6 credits.
Cortland-Venezuela
Students are enrolled at the VENUSA Institute of International Studies and Modern Languages. Limited number of classes, other than language and culture, offered in English. Classes taught in English may incorporate Venezuelan students as well. Classes may require course-related field trips and at least one community- related field project. Full or part-time internships available to qualified students. Home stays. This program provides for direct enrollment in host university courses. Prerequisite(s): Overall 2.5 GPA and one semester of Spanish. Admitted students register for G Ins 402C for 6 credits per semester.
Academic Year/Semester Programs Abroad
Academic year/semester programs administered by the University at Albany offer opportunities in a wide variety of disciplines. Undergraduates normally register for 15-18 credits during the semester or 30-36 credits during the academic year.
Current program sites are: China (People's Republic)-Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai, and Tianjin; Brazil-Brasilia and Campinas; Costa Rica-San José; Denmark-Copenhagen; Dominican Republic- Santo Domingo; England-Hull, London, Nottingham, and Plymouth; Finland-Oulu; France-Grenoble; Germany-Würzburg; Ghana-Legon; Israel-Ramat Gan, Be'er Sheva, Haifa, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv; Japan-Osaka; Netherlands-Nijmegen, Tilburg; Korea-Seoul; Puerto Rico-San Juan; Russia-Moscow; Singapore; Scotland-Glasgow; Spain-Madrid and Valencia; Wales-Swansea.
Other four-year State University of New York campuses offer additional programs for which Albany students are eligible. Students participating in one of these programs register on the Albany campus which permits them to maintain residency and eligibility for financial aid. Students participating in two- year community college, contract college, or non-SUNY programs during the academic year request a leave for approved study from the Albany campus for the duration of the program. Programs in Africa
Albany/Brockport-Ghana
An Overseas Academic program with the University of Ghana in Legon for the academic year or fall semester. Qualified students enroll in regular undergraduate courses in liberal arts, social and non-laboratory natural sciences and African Studies. Prerequisite(s): junior standing, 3.00 cumulative average. Students admitted to the overseas program register for G Ins 323A and B for 1-18 credits per semester.
Programs in Continental Europe
Albany-Copenhagen
Students enroll in courses offered by Denmark's International Study Program at the University of Copenhagen. Courses are taught in English by Danish faculty in the humanities, social sciences, and marine environmental sciences, including international politics, economics, history, literature, art history, Danish language, international business, and architecture and design. Students may participate in the program for the academic year or either semester. Prerequisite(s): junior or senior class standing with a minimum overall cumulative average of 3.00. Admitted students register for G Ins 301A and B for 1-15 credits per semester.
Albany-Finland
An undergraduate exchange program for the semester or academic year at the University of Oulu, in Finland. Students may enroll in regular courses if they are proficient in Finnish, or they may choose courses offered in English, in the subject areas of: Japanese Studies, Northern Cultures and Societies, Scandinavian Studies, Environmental Students, and other areas in Humanities, the Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. Open to students with above average academic standing. Admitted students register for G Ins 332A and B for 1-18 credits per semester.
Albany/Buffalo-Grenoble
Qualified students may choose from appropriate courses offered at the University of Grenoble. Coursework also available at elementary and intermediate level. Students must have completed advanced level course work for direct enrollment and for upper- level courses designed for foreign students. University at Albany French majors will obtain additional information concerning prerequisites from the French department. Program includes pre-session and academic year or semester course work. Admitted students register for G Ins 340A and B for 1-18 credits per semester.
Albany-Madrid
Undergraduate courses for American students at the International Institute in Madrid. Courses are offered in Spanish language, literature, art, history, philosophy, politics, and commercial Spanish. Prerequisite(s): two and one half years of college- level Spanish or the equivalent, and above-average scholastic record. Well-qualified sophomores may also participate. Admitted students register for G Ins 309A and B for 1-18 credits per semester.
Albany-Valencia
An undergraduate exchange program for the semester or academic year in Valencia, Spain. Students may enroll in undergraduate courses in the culture, business, economy, and the art of Spain, and the European community, taught in English. Spanish language at all levels. Direct enrollment possible is area universities for students with advanced Spanish. Live with host families. Open to sophomores and above. No language prerequisite. Admitted students register for G Ins 334A and B for 1-18 credits per semester.
Albany-Netherlands/Nijmegen
Exchange program with Hogeschool Gelderland. Courses in linguistics, teaching English as a second language, psycholinguistics, error analysis, audio visual aids, English and American literature, and history of the theatre. Courses are conducted in English. Prerequisite(s): junior standing, above average academic record and one linguistics course. Admitted students register for G Ins 307A and B for 1-18 credits per semester.
Albany-Netherlands/Tilburg
A program with Tilburg University. Courses conducted in English in business administration, economics, international studies, law, and social science for semester or academic year. Prerequisite(s): junior standing, above average academic record. Admitted students register for G Ins 324A and B for 1-18 credits per semester.
Albany-Santander Exchange
An exchange program with 37 universities in 16 European countries, which are members of the Santander Group Consortium. Direct enrollment in university courses. Prerequisite(s): junior standing, above-average academic record, advanced level of foreign language except for study in Ireland, England, Scandinavia and the Netherlands. Admitted students register for G Ins 328A or B for 1-18 credits.
Albany-Würzburg
Qualified students may enroll in regular courses offered at the University of Würzburg. Prerequisite(s): above-average academic record, and two years of college-level German or equivalent. Program includes pre-session and is for academic year or semester. Admitted students register for G Ins 325A and B for 1-21 credits per semester.

Albany-China
Exchange program with Fudan University, Nanjing University, Nankai University, and Peking University. Courses in Chinese language and culture. Linguistically qualified students may choose from courses in the humanities and social sciences, including art history, archaeology, Chinese language and literature, Chinese history, political science, and philosophy at one of the above universities.
A pre-session providing intensive language instruction and orientation to the Chinese university system may be required. Prerequisite(s): sophomore standing, above-average academic record, one year of college-level Mandarin Chinese or equivalent. Students are strongly urged to enroll for the academic year, but may register for one semester only. Admitted students register for G Ins 300A and B for 1-18 credits per semester.
Albany-Japan
Undergraduate exchange program with Kansai Gaidai (Kansai University of Foreign Studies). Courses in Japanese language, literature, Asian studies, economics, history, management, politics, psychology, and sociology. With the exception of language courses, all courses are conducted in English. Program is for one semester or the academic year. Prerequisite(s): junior standing (or exceptionally qualified sophomores), above average academic record. Admitted students register for G Ins 306A and B for 1-18 credits per semester.
Albany-Korea
Undergraduate exchange program with Yonsei University. Courses in anthropology, art history, business, economics, history, law, philosophy, political science, sociology and Korean language. With the exception of language courses, all courses are conducted in English. Students who are fluent in Korean may enroll in regular university courses. Prerequisite(s): junior standing (or exceptionally qualified sophomores), above average academic record. Admitted students register for G Ins 321A and B for 1-18 credits per semester.
Albany-Singapore
Exchange program with the National University of Singapore. Courses in Southeast Asian Studies, liberal arts and business administration. Courses are conducted in English. Intensive Chinese language study is also available. Prerequisite(s): junior standing, above-average academic record. Admitted students register for G Ins 308A and B for 1-18 credits per semester.

Albany-Israel
Study is offered at Bar-Ilan University in Ramat Gan, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, the University of Haifa in Haifa, the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv University in Tel Aviv. Several programs are offered and may include courses in Judaic, Israeli, and Middle East Studies, Hebrew language and the liberal arts, natural science, psychology, archaeological digs, internships, community service, and Kibbutz stay. Students who are fluent in Hebrew may take courses in all subject areas. Prerequisite(s): sophomore standing and above-average scholastic aptitude. Program includes pre-semester Ulpan and semester or entire academic year (11 1/2 months of study). Admitted students register for G Ins 305a for 1-21 credits and 305b for 1-18 credits.
Albany-Israel Summer Program
Topics of special interest organized by Israeli universities (Ben Gurion, Hebrew U.). Admitted students register for G Ins for 3-6 credits.

Albany-Brazil
Exchange program with University of Brasilia, and the State University of Campinas in Brazil. Undergraduate and graduate students may enroll in regular university courses in Portuguese literature and linguistics and liberal arts. Prerequisite(s): junior standing, above-average academic record, two years of college-level Portuguese. Admitted students register for G Ins 311A and B for 1-18 credits per semester.
Albany-Costa Rica
A program with the University of Costa Rica in San José. Undergraduate students enroll in regular university courses in Spanish literature and linguistics, Latin American area studies, and liberal arts. Program includes pre-session. Prerequisite(s): junior standing (or exceptionally qualified sophomores), above- average academic record, two and one-half years of college-level Spanish or equivalent. Albany-Dominican Republic
A program with the National University P.H. Ureña. Spanish language plus courses conducted in English on Dominican culture, Latino Studies, Africana Studies and internships in business, government agency or education. Exchange program with the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón (University of the Sacred Heart).
