Athletics and Recreation
UAlbany's intercollegiate athletics program excels at the NCAA Division I level, producing competitive teams, successful coaches, and outstanding student-athletes recognized for their accomplishments both on the field and in the classroom. The University sponsors 19 varsity sports for men and women. Club sports, an intramural program, and recreational opportunities are also offered.
As a member of the America East Conference, 17 of the school's 19 varsity teams are eligible for conference championships and NCAA post-season competition. Football, a Division I FCS program, is an associate member of the Northeast Conference. Women’s Golf is an associate member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
UAlbany has won 39 conference championships and produced 15 NCAA Tournament teams since moving to Division I. In 2008-09, the Great Danes finished second in the America East Commissioner’s Cup standings. UAlbany captured conference titles in women’s volleyball, women's field hockey, men’s indoor track, women’s golf, women's outdoor track and men’s outdoor track. Football won its fourth Northeast Conference championship. UAlbany had its most significant as a Division I program in 2006-07. Men's lacrosse and softball became the first teams to record victories in NCAA Division I post-season competition.

The indoor and outdoor physical education design is among the most comprehensive in the Northeast. The SEFCU Arena, a state-of-the-art facility; the Physical Education Building, which houses University Gymnasium; and an air-supported bubble are utilized for sporting and cultural activities. In addition, there are lighted tennis courts, racquetball/squash/handball courts, a swimming pool, a dance studio, and a fitness and weight training center. UAlbany recently constructed two all-weather athletic fields. "John Fallon Field" is the home to the men's and women's lacrosse teams. An adjacent surface known as "Alumni Turf Field" is the home turf for women's field hockey in addition to serving as a multi-use recreational field for UAlbany students.
