The Helen G. and Bernard Horowitz Endowment, which will provide scholarship aid to students with financial need, has been established to meet the financial pressures on students due to college expenses.
Helen and Bernard Horowitz, now retired, spent their professional careers at the University. Bernard as the Director of Counseling at the College at Cobleskill, and Helen as a Professor of Economics and director of the undergraduate program in the Economics Department at Albany.
The Horowitzes have committed over $50,000 to the future of this fund and the endowment has attracted additional support from Professor Horowitz's former students.
Frances Cornell Lemke '31 has an additional generous contribution of $10,00 through the University's Charitable Gift Annuity Program. Mrs. Lemke, a continuing contributor to the University Pooled Income Fund Trust, has designated her gifts toward the establishment of a scholarship endowment that will benefit students for generations to come.
Sorrell Chesin, Associate Vice President for University Advancement, said "Mrs. Lemke well remembers the financial difficulties that students encountered during her years at the New York State College for Teachers. We are most grateful to her and to her husband, Charles Lemke, for their philanthropic support."
Chesin also noted with sadness the passing of Daniel Roe, husband of the late Betty Knowlton Roe '42. Daniel Roe's bequest of $20,00 will be added to the Betty Knowlton Roe Endowment, which was established through the proceeds of a trust. The endowment is designated for scholarship awards to students preparing for teaching careers.
