Sally Helgesen has been called, “the world’s premier expert on women’s leadership” (Forbes). A bestselling author, speaker and leadership coach, she has spent the last thirty years advising women leaders, companies and organizations around the world. Her new book, coauthored with Marshall Goldsmith, is How Women Rise: Break the 12 Habits Holding You Back from Your Next Raise, Promotion, or Job (2018). In a recent interview published in Parade magazine, Helgesen addressed one of the challenged women face in the workplace. “People who are stuck in mid-career know what they want to do, but are afraid to try it,” Helgesen said. “That fear resides in every one of us, no matter what career path we are on. The more we indulge our fears, the more risk-averse we become, and risk-aversion is always going to keep us stuck.” Previous books include The Female Advantage: Women’s Ways of Leadership, a classic in print continuously since 1990, and The Web of Inclusion (1995), named one of the best books on leadership of all time by The Wall Street Journal. The event is cosponsored by the University at Albany Center for Leadership and Service, and the Times Union Women@Work network of business and professional women.
