THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM
NELSON ALGREN CELEBRATION FEATURES SCREENING OF “THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM” WITH COMMENTARY BY NOVELISTS RUSSELL BANKS AND DON DE LILLO
NYS Writers Institute, November 6, 2009
7:00 p.m. Film Screening and Commentary by authors RUSSELL BANKS and DON DeLILLO
Page Hall, 135 Western Avenue, Downtown Campus
To celebrate Nelson Algren’s centenary the NYS Writers Institute offers a rare glimpse into the life and work of the great American novelist with a screening of “The Man With the Golden Arm” (United States, 1955, 119 minutes, b/w, directed by Otto Preminger, based on the novel by Nelson Algren) on Friday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. [NOTE EARLY START TIME] in Page Hall, 135 Western
Avenue, on the University at Albany’s downtown campus. The screening will be followed by commentary by two of Algren’s protégés, novelists Russell Banks and Don DeLillo. Sponsored by the New York State Writers Institute, the screening is free and open to the public.
Frank Sinatra plays against type and turns in what is often considered to be his best performance on screen in this film based on the novel by Nelson Algren.
Don DeLillo (“End Zone,” “White Noise,” “Libra,” “Underworld”), who joins the Writers Institute in a rare public appearance, and Russell Banks (“Continental Drift,” “The Sweet Hereafter,” “Cloudsplitter,” “The Reserve”) recent State Author, will speak about their mentor after the screening of this gritty tale of jazz, heroin, hep-cats and low-lifes in post-war Chicago, Algren’s famously-named “city on the make.”
