In Marcel Pagnol's directorial debut, a young man discovers that the man who raised him is not his biological father. Shaken, Césariot goes off in search of his mother's former lover, the sailor Marius, now a mechanic in the French coastal city of Toulon. Pretending to be a journalist, Césariot uncovers unpleasant secrets about his father's life. The film is the third and final installment in the famous Marseilles Trilogy, widely considered to be one of the landmark achievements of French cinema.
