A DOUBLE LIFE was the first of many acclaimed collaborations between director George Cukor and the screenwriting team of Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin. The film, which brings film noir sensibilities to the world of the stage, stars Ronald Colman in an Oscar-winning performance as a Shakespearean actor who becomes mentally unhinged after taking the part of Othello. The film also marks the first notable role for Shelley Winters, who won critical admiration of her performance as the doomed waitress.
