In Lars von Trier's self-referential film, the director and screenwriter play a director and screenwriter. As the two filmmakers collaborate on a script about a global epidemic, a real epidemic begins to strike everyone around them. Von Trier, responsible for such award-winning films as Breaking the Waves (1996) and Dancer in the Dark (2000), shot most of Epidemic in documentary style using a 16mm camera.
