The second installment of Marcel Pagnol's "Marseilles Trilogy" begins with the fortunes of Fanny who has married the elderly Monsieur Panisse after discovering that she is pregnant with the child of her lover, Marius. Panisse is an attentive and loving father to Cesario. Matters come to a head when Marius returns from the sea and battles Panisse for custody.
