Based on the classic John Steinbeck novel, THE GRAPES OF WRATH is one of director John Ford's greatest films. It recounts the poignant story of a family forced to leave their farm in Oklahoma and travel to California to find work during the Great Depression. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won two, for Best Supporting Actress Jane Darwell) and Best Director. This screening celebrates the centenary of John Steinbeck's birth in 1902. Perhaps as deeply as any 20th century American writer, Steinbeck engaged the major social, cultural, and political issues of his day.
