Upon his arrival at the gates of Hell, an elderly playboy is surprised there is any question of his suitability. He recounts his life from infancy to his death, concentrating on his 25 years of marriage. Based on the Hungarian play Birthday by Ladislaus Bus-Fekete, Heaven Can Wait was director Lubitsch's first color film. The famous "Lubitsch touch" is everywhere evident.
