Director Alfred Hitchcock and his wife, Alma Reveille, wrote this screen adaptation of Sean O'Casey's stage drama. The film was only the famed director's second experience with talking motion pictures. Set during the Irish "troubles" of the 1920s, the film explores the trials and tragedies that befall a Dublin tenement family.
