PROFILE: Mosher’s other most recent novels include Walking to Gatlinburg (2010), a Civil War odyssey that Publishers Weekly described as “an engrossing tale with mass appeal;” On Kingdom Mountain (2007); and Waiting for Teddy Williams (2005), which Publishers Weekly called “one of the funniest and most heartfelt baseball stories in recent memory.” Three of Mosher’s earlier novels were adapted for film by director Jay Craven, Disappearances (1977, film 2006), starring Kris Kristofferson and Billy Connolly; Where the Rivers Flow North (1978, film1994), starring Rip Torn and Michael J. Fox; and A Stranger in the Kingdom (1989, film 1998), starring Martin Sheen and Ernie Hudson. Mosher has also written two memoirs, North Country: A Personal Journey through the Borderland (1997), and The Great Northern Express: A Writer’s Journey Home (2012), about his three-month coast-to-coast sojourn following intensive radiation treatment for prostate cancer. Mosher has received numerous awards for this work including Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Literature Award, the New England Book Award, and the 2011 New England Independent Booksellers Association’s President’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts.
