Australian filmmaker Gillian Armstrong directs this Victorian-era love story based on the novel by Australian author Peter Carey. Lucinda Leplastrier, the owner of an Australian glass factory, and Oscar Hopkins, a theology student on his way to minister in the Australian Outback, meet aboard a ship bound for Sydney. Because of their shared interest in gambling a friendship develops, which leads them to collaborate on building a structure of iron and glass. The movie received two Academy Award nominations and won for Best Costume Design (Janet Patterson).
