Grace Paley, Robert Nichols to Read at KSC KEENE, N.H. 10/30/01 - Authors Grace Paley and Robert Nichols will read from their work at Keene State College on Thursday, Nov. 8. The reading, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 3 p.m. in the Madison Street Lounge of the Student Center. Paley, who has been named both the New York and the Vermont state writer, is one of America�s most revered short story writers. Born in New York City, Paley is the author of three acclaimed collections of short fiction � The Little Disturbances of Man (1959), Enormous Changes at the Last Minute (1974), and Later the Same Day (1985) � as well as several collections of poetry. Paley has received numerous awards including the Lannan Literary Award for Fiction (1997) and the National Book Award for Fiction (1994). Her most recent work, The Collected Stories, was published in 1994. Paley has taught at Columbia University, Syracuse University, the City College of New York, and Sarah Lawrence College. She has also been involved in the antiwar and feminist movements, and visited Hanoi and Moscow as a member of peace delegations. A landscape architect who operated a construction business on Manhattan�s Lower East Side, Robert Nichols was born in Worcester, Mass. He left home at an early age, and some of his travel experiences are recounted in his first book of poems, Slow Newsreel of Man Riding Train (1962). Among his many other works are a four-part series of novels set in Nghsi-Altai, a fictional utopia, the short story collection In the Air (1991), and a number of plays, some of which have been performed by The New York Public Theatre, Theatre for the New City, and the Bread and Puppet Theatre.
