A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

March 12, 1999 (Friday) at 7:30 p.m.

Page Hall, 135 Western Avenue
(Free and Open to the Public)

(Irish, 1979, 98 minutes, color, 35 mm)
Directed by Joseph Strick
Starring Bosco Hogan, T. P. McKenna, John Gielgud

Director Joseph Strick uses visual representation in place of much of the stream-of-consciousness of James Joyce's autobiographical novel in this film adaptation. The film incorporates much of the novel's ideology in this story of an Irish youth's journey into manhood, and his problems in breaking away from his strict Catholic upbringing. The photography of the Irish countryside is breathtaking.
