A professional hit man undertakes the job of killing a night club owner. After completing the hit he discovers that he has left a witness and that the man he is working for has put out a hit on him. Director Jean-Pierre Melville mixes the conventions of American crime films from the 40s and 50s with a distinctly European austerity in this film noir masterpiece.
