Brenda Wineapple, Professor Modern Literary and Historical Studies at Union College, is the author of the biographies Sister Brother: Gertrude & Leo Stein (1996) and Genet: A Biography of Janet Flanner (1989).

James R. Mellow is the author of the National Book Award-winning Hawthorne and His Times (19 ) as well as a trilogy of biographies of Gertrude Stein, F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, and Ernest Hemingway. At present he is completing a biography of the photographer Walker Evans.
