Offered by Distinguished Writer-in-Residence John Montague
New York State Writers Institute Distinguished Writer-in-Residence John Montague will conduct a Poetry MasterClass Workshop during the Spring 1999 semester. It is intended for advanced writers--writers who have at least five publications in significant literary journals. It will be an intensive six-session workshop.
The Poetry MasterClass Workshop is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday evenings (March 25, 30, April 1, 6, 8 and 13) from 6 to 9:00 p.m. The class will be held on the University at Albany's uptown campus. The workshop is offered free of charge for no credit, and will be limited to ten writers. To be considered, submit manuscripts to the Writers Institute according to the guidelines listed below. Due to the volume of manuscripts received from previous workshops, we must insist that you follow the guidelines exactly.
Guidelines
All manuscripts must be typewritten.
All submissions must include a separate cover sheet with name, address, work and home telephone numbers, the title of your submission and a publication list (only five items of poetry are required).
Submit no more than five pages of poems, one poem per page, or individual poems up to five pages in length. Clearly indicate the title of each poem. To insure a blind selection process, do not put your name on the pages of poems.
Be sure to keep a copy of your work as your manuscripts will not be returned to you.
Writers enrolled in a University at Albany poetry class for the Spring 1999 semester, whether graduate or undergraduate, are not eligible. Auditing of the class is not permitted.
Manuscripts delivered in person will be accepted up until l:00 p.m. on Friday, February 19, 1999. Mailed manuscripts must be postmarked not later than Wednesday, February 17, 1999. Faxes will not be accepted. The NYS Writers Institute is not responsible for newspaper misprints or notices appearing after the deadline due dates.
Notification of acceptance will be by Wednesday, March 17, 1999. Please do not call regarding the status of your manuscript. We regret that neither Mr. Montague nor the Institute can comment on manuscripts by writers not selected.
