SCOPE:
The collection follows the progress of natural history in the United States from the founding of the American Philosophical Society in 1769 to the end of the Civil War. The 302 titles included are in the fields of botany, geology, mineralogy, paleontology, and zoology. Independent journals, geological and natural history surveys, reports of explorations, and publications from scientific societies are included.
Segment II of the American natural history collection is based on Max Meisel's Bibliography of American natural history, 1769-1865. It includes early geological survey reports covering Alabama through Wisconsin.

The documents are in alphabetical order by author, often an institution or government agency, and are listed within one of three segments based on type of publication:
