      SCOPE:

            Reproduces 233 English periodicals published in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The focus is on Literature, but "these periodicals deal with a wide variety of subjects [including] theater, art, music, history, politics, sociology, philosophy, economics, religion, and science." Defoe, Steele, Addison, Swift, Fielding, Johnson, Smollett, Dickens, and Thackery are among the writers represented.

      ARRANGEMENT:

            The titles were filmed as they were available.

MIC FINDING AIDS:

            Each year a certain number of titles were filmed  and a reel guide issued. Guides for the years 1-18 have  been cumulated in one alphabetical title list with a  subject and author index. Guides for years 19-22 have been issued separately. These guides are located in the Microform Reading Room.

            English Literary Periodicals: Bibliography, Ann Arbor, Michigan: University Microfilms International, 1978 is an alphabetical listing of all the tiles  reproduced in this series. Cards for individual titles (in this series) are  filed in the card catalog and appear in the periodical printout.

            Individual articles in some of the periodicals in this collection can be located through Walter Houghton's The Wellesley Index to Victorian Periodicals, 1824-1900,  Toronto: University Press, 1966+. 

            Poole's Index to Periodical Literature, 1802-1906 also indexes some of the major English literary  magazines.
