SCOPE:
Edinburgh University and the Royal Society of London sponsored the voyage, one of the most important oceanographic explorations ever undertaken. The Challenger travelled nearly 69,000 miles and collected samples from Tenerife, the Azores, Madeira, the Casa Verde Islands, the Fiji Islands, Tahiti, the Antarctic, and many other locations.
