SCOPE:
From the establishment of the United States until 1873, the State Department was reponsible for the government of all United States territories. (In 1873 this function was transferred to the Department of the Interior). The correspondence and reports reproduced cover all aspects of governing the territories of Kansas, Nebraska, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.
