      SCOPE:

            This set reproduces the 128 volumes issued by the U. S. Government from 1881-1900 of Union and Confederate records of "every company, battery, regiment, brigade, division, corps and army, as well as those (from) military departments and divisions, and (including) the files of the War Department and all of its bureaus." The records of the Union Army are "to a great extent complete;" however the Confederate records are "in many repects deficient."

            Reels 64-66: Series III, vols. 1-5.

The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies is a printed guide which includes a snyopsis of the volumes.  Also, the first reel begins with a "Special Index  for the principal Armies, Army corps, Military Divisions GUIDE and Departments" and a general index to names and events mentioned in the collection. These indices refer the reader to appropriate series and volume; each volume has its own index which must be consulted for detailed references and page numbers.
