Our current world is less a bureaucracy or even a technocracy than a mediacracy, in which the construction and management of society are controlled by the ever-extending sway of the media.

As feminists concerned with global politics we have to be involved in the production and reception of mainstream media,

as well as, the alternative networks of communication which allow for the eruption of new forms of knowledge.

Therefore we can take Laura Bush's speach and counteract this with images in the media of "white womanhoods" connection to patriotic values.

These issues are deeply ingrained in American conceptions of identity and how we react to the war in Afghanistan.

The women of Afghanistan will not be displaced by romantic notions of missoniary resuce.

We will instead recognize the historical, political and religious ideologies that create oppression.

We must reimagine ourselfs, not as individuals, but as part of a larger community.
