Geoff Wood has a master’s degree in sociology from California State University, Sacramento and is completing his final degree requirements for a Ph.D. in sociology from SUNY-Albany. While at SUNY -Albany, Mr. Wood specialized in research methodology and developed sophisticated quantitative and qualitative skills in research design and analysis. Geoff’s 10 years of experience as a researcher, evaluator, instructor, and journal editor have focused on program design of substance abuse and domestic violence among probationers on tribal reservations, salient community issues within the black community, and cognitive-behavioral treatment interventions for substance abusing youth.
While at the University of Arizona, Mr. Wood coordinated a National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trial examining the impact of Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT) as a therapeutic intervention for substance abusing and delinquent youth. Through this clinical trial, Mr. Wood developed extensive knowledge of cognitive-behavioral treatment programs used within probation and juvenile justice detention centers both at the state and national levels. He was also able to use his methodological knowledge to assist with the development and implementation of a rating system to assess the immediacy and permanency goals of cognitive-behavioral treatment programs and to then use this rating system across the country to evaluate the efficacy and fidelity of different cognitive-behavioral programs.
Additionally, Mr. Wood gained experience at the California Office of Criminal Justice Planning and assisted on both adult and juvenile correction program grants. On these programs grants, Mr. Wood conducted focus groups with probation officers, designed surveys to assess fidelity to programmatic models, and managed project outcome studies. More recently, at LeCroy & Milligan Associates, Inc., Mr. Wood has conducted a longitudinal experimental outcome study of an pregnancy prevention study, evaluation of a home-visitation program, an early childhood education and health community statewide survey, a large statewide early childhood education and health needs and assets assessment, and provided data analysis support for various evaluation projects. In January 2009, Mr. Wood joined the staff at NCJJ to work on the MacArthur Foundation juvenile justice reform initiative and various aftercare, case processing, and juvenile justice system projects.
