I received the following email from Bradley Jobling of the New York Academy of Sciences:

I am pleased to share that Dr. Robert Langer, the David H. Koch Institute Professor at Massachusetts Insitute of Technology, who is also a graduate of the Milne School, has been awarded the 2023 Dr. Paul Janssen Award. Dr. Langer is being honored for his pioneering research into biomedical compounds for drug delivery and tissue engineering, which has impacted a wide range of medical technologies. He will accept this award in a virtual symposium on February 8, 2024.

Many Janssen Award winners go on to be highly honored by other highly esteemed awards, including Nobel Prizes. I am telling you about this as you may want to share this news so they can also learn about the highly innovative work being done by Dr. Langer and his relationship with the Milne School.

As a producer of scientific conferences, word of mouth is an important way for the Academy to let others know about ceremonies like this one. Please feel free to share this news on your social media networks, newsletters and websites. You may use the flyer and media kit. The media kit includes sample social posts with graphics. If I can answer any questions or send you anything else, ask.

GINNAH (HUNTINGTON) HOWARD, '57, POEM COLLECTION

From Ginnah (Huntington) Howard, '57:

A few days ago, I had the pleasure of receiving an acceptance of my 60-poem-collection "An Opera of Hankering" by https://wordtechcommunications.com Though I always loved to read, my Milne teachers would be surprised that I ended up becoming an English teacher for 27 years. I was a delinquent student at best—never doing my algebra homework and not showing up until late in the morning with a forged excuse. Mr. Cowley, the head of the art department, described me as a "fly-by-night" and many of you in the class of '57 surely remember that you almost didn’t get your yearbook due to my procrastination as the editor.

I had never done any creative writing until my early 40s when the New York State English Bureau recommended that English teachers write poetry, memoir, creative non-fiction,short stories with their students. They began to have published writers do workshops in our classes. On the first day, the visiting poet said to me, "You’ll be writing poems with the class. Please sit in the back and plan to share your work." Scary indeed. I wrote my first poem, the poet wrote a positive comment on the top of my paper, and I’ve been writing ever since. If you’re interested to learn what that experience led to, please check my author webpage: www.GinnahHoward.com
