ONLINE MILNE YEARBOOKS AND NEWSPAPERS

If you haven't done so already, be sure to check out the Milne School Digital Collections. I was recently attempting to determine whether someone who was not listed on our website had, in fact, graduated from Milne. All I knew was that she probably had graduated in 1972. So I did a search of the 1972 Bricks & Ivy and saw that she was listed as a senior at Milne in 1972! Without our digitization project, I wouldn't have been able to gain this information so quickly.

Also, while performing research for my family tree, I did a Google search for the wife of a relative, using her maiden name...and within the results was a Crimson & White issue, which provided me with some helpful information!

So besides giving alumni a chance to revisit their Milne experiences and allowing their descendants to have a unique opportunity to learn about their ancestors' high school years, our project has enabled us to find specific information that we may need.

If you are able to provide missing newspapers or yearbooks, please let me know. We will be able to add any missing documents as they are found. Remember, all documents are searchable. Be sure to "bookmark" the above link for future reference.

GOOD NEWS!

Peter Bulger, '73, and his wife Cindy recently received the 2015 Humanitarian Award given by the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). The following is from the CCFA program. Congratulations to Peter and Cindy!

"Peter is the immediate-past Executive Managing Director, Chief Operating Officer of CL King & Associates, Inc. and member of the Board of Directors, retiring this year after 22 years of service. He remains an advisor and consultant to the company.

"He has more than 37 years of experience in the securities industry and holds numerous licenses in the investment advisory and broker-dealer industry. In past years, Peter held operational and compliance positions with First Albany Corporation, Paradigm Capital Management, Inc., Shearson Lehman Brothers, Inc and the National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc.

"Currently he serves on the Board of Directors of the University at Albany Foundation and Board of the Institute of Financial Market Regulation sponsored by the Albany Law School/Rockefeller College and the University at Albany. He is also a member of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association ('SIFMA'); a member of SIFMA Institutional Brokerage Committee, which he chaired in 2010; a member of the Compliance and Legal Society; and a charter member and president-elect (2011) of the Securities Expert Roundtable since 1994.

"Peter received a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the State University of New York at Albany and an MBA from Fordham University.

"He has been active in numerous nonprofit organizations involved with youth activities including serving as the Eastern New York State Commissioner of Babe Ruth Baseball for many years and President of Bethlehem Babe Ruth.

"Peter is a longtime resident of the area who attended Albany public schools and the Milne School.

"Cindy grew up in Piseco, a small town in the Adirondacks. She is a registered nurse, whose career ranged from critical care to public health nursing. She has remained active in the community. Cindy has served on the Board of Community Caregivers, and is currently a volunteer at the Habitat for Humanity Restore and the Albany County Medical Reserve Corps.

"Peter and Cindy have raised two sons, Peter (Zareen) and Mark (Yuxiang). The Bulgers have one grandchild, Sienna Grace. They reside in Delmar and enjoy family time, travel, and summers in Lake George.

"CCFA is pleased to recognize Peter & Cindy for their support of our efforts and their community involvement. We are honored to present them with the Humanitarian Award."

Ginna Howard, ’57: From the back cover of her new book, I’m Sick of This Already: At-Risk Learning in a High School Class:

"It’s the first day of school at Stanton Central High. The teacher stands by the door as ready as she’s going to be. The 6B Improvement of Language Skills class bursts in: Neal, with a shaved head; Joe, wearing three earrings; Vance, in dark glasses and a heavy navy jacket, the same one he wore the few days he attended last year...plus the other fourteen. 'I’m hungry'...'I hate English'...'I’m sick of this already.' And so the new year begins. We will be with them for two semesters and we will get to know them all. We’ll read their poems and journals. Be in on their muttered remarks and jokes. We’ll see what they put in their Time Capsules and hear what they have to say in their interviews. We’ll listen to their discussions as they watch Great Expectations. Many of us will come to care about all of them and be sad when some of them run away or get arrested or become pregnant. We’ll understand why this teacher is relieved when Stan and Mike are both absent on a subzero Monday in the middle of February. Lots of days, we’ll give her a gold star for her efforts."

Ralph Fletcher, author of Walking Trees: Portraits of Teachers and Children in the Cultures of Schools, said: “Wow. This is a terrific book by a woman who really knows at-risk high school students who are living 'on the edge.' And she knows how to write....She does a marvelous job of creating the world of school, the rhythms of the classroom, the body language of students....Howard knows her kids. She looks at them with deep, thoughtful, loving eyes. Readers will sense this from the first page."

I’m Sick of This Already: At-Risk Learning in a High School Class is now available at www.Amazon.com. For more information, go to www.GinnahHoward.com.
