Prerequisites
AMAT 520A & 540B, or permission of instructor.
Description
- Basic category theory notions — categories, functors, natural transformations, adjunctions, (co)limits, (co)ends, Kan extensions — and lots of examples;
- the relation among small categories, simplicial sets, and topological spaces;
- monoidal categories and enriched category theory;
- time permitting, some higher category theory at the end.
Textbook
None, but lecture notes and additional reading material will be distributed in class.
Grading
Weekly homework assignments.
Students are expected to attend all class meetings. The maximum number of absences permitted to receive credit for this course is 5 (five). Excessive tardiness may count as absence.
