What is the Peer Mentor Program?
The program pairs students interested in the math major (mathematics, actuarial, statistics or related combined programs), recent transfers or recent math/actuarial majors, with junior and senior mentors who will help them navigate through their academic experience in the department.
There is evidence that suggests that having such a mentor relationship is more likely to lead to academic success.
Mentoring pairs will meet at least once a month to discuss whatever issues are most pressing for the mentee, for example, getting help in courses, studying for midterms, selecting courses, as well as being a student at UAlbany.
A mentor is not a tutor. A mentor is a student who has already had some experience in the math program and is available to provide guidance and support to other students.
Goals of the peer mentor program:
Support students in their transition into their math/actuarial major and life at the university
Build commuity between upper-class and new-to-program students
Provide peer advisement on a student-to-student basis on courses, talking with advisors, campus life, studying skills.
