Ghost View Installation Notes.


Many people have difficulty installing ghostview and ghostscript under windows. Therfore, I took it upon myself to write a home page that provides a step by step process detailing what must be done before ghost view and ghost script will work.

Obtaining Ghost View and Ghost Script.


Before you can install anything you will need to obtain ghostview and ghostscript programs. It is interesting to note that you cannot run ghostview without ghostscript. To obtain both Ghost Script and Ghost View create a directory called gsview and a directory call gs. Then download the following files into there respective directories.


Ghost View

File(s) to retrieve:

These files belong in the directory gsview.

Ghost Script

File(s) to retrieve: These Files belong in the directory gs.

Unzipping the files.

Unzipping the files is as easy as 1-2-3. Follow these few and simple steps. From windows:

  1. Move gswin333.zip to the root directory
  2. Get a dos prompt and change to the root directory
  3. Type pkunzip -d gswin333.zip
  4. Change directories to gswin3.33
  5. Type pkunzip -d gs333fnt1.zip
  6. Type pkunzip -d gs333fnt2.zip
  7. Type pkunzip -d gs333ini.zip
  8. change directories to c:\gsview
  9. Type pkunzip -d gsvw122b.zip
  10. Exit the dos prompt

Installing the executables

If you thought the last section was easy this is as easy as 1-2. Follow these simple steps: From Windows:

  1. Create a new program group and call it "Ghostview".
  2. Create a new program item.
  3. Type C:\GSVIEW\GSVIEW.EXE as the command line.
  4. Type C:\GSVIEW as the working directory.
  5. Type GhostView as the name.
  6. Create a second program item.
  7. Type C:\GS3.33\GSWIN.EXE as the command line.
  8. Type C:\GS3.33 as the working directoy.

Configuring Ghostview

To configure ghostview you will do the following:

  1. Start Ghostview.
  2. Ignore all error messages for now.
  3. Hold down the alt key and type p followed by g.
  4. Type the following under Ghostscript command: C:\GS3.33\gswin -IC:\GS3.33\;C:\GS3.33\fonts;

Configuring Ghostscript to work with Netscape

In order for ghostscript to work with netscape you will need to do the following.

  1. Start netscape.
  2. Click on options then preferences.
  3. Change the cobo box selection to Helper Applications.
  4. Scroll down the list of MIME types untill you see one entiled "Application/Postscript"
  5. Click on this.
  6. Click on launch application.
  7. Type: C:\GSVIEW\GSVIEW.EXE into the text box.
  8. Click on ok.

Your post-script viewer is now properly configured.
