George Akwetey, international student from Ghana, is a former Graduate Ambassador and recent graduate of the Master of Public Health (MPH) program at the University at Albany. Below, George shares some information about his journey.

Why did you choose a Master of Public Health (MPH)? What do you want to do with your degree?

My interest in public health was sparked by a desire to make a tangible difference in communities. Growing up in Ghana, I witnessed firsthand the impact of limited access to healthcare and health education. I chose an MPH to gain the knowledge and skills needed to address these challenges effectively. With my degree, I aim to work in health policy development and implementation, focusing on improving healthcare access and quality for underserved populations.

Why did you choose UAlbany?

One of the main reasons I chose UAlbany was its strong reputation in public health education and research. UAlbany’s MPH program offers a comprehensive curriculum that aligns with my academic and career goals. Additionally, UAlbany's commitment to diversity and inclusion was important to me as an international student. The campus community is welcoming and supportive, creating an ideal environment for learning and growth. The comparatively lower tuition rate relative to other universities was also a significant factor in my decision-making process. As an international graduate student, affordability was a key consideration, and UAlbany's tuition rates made it a more accessible option for me.

What advice do you have for others who want to pursue the same program as you?

For those interested in pursuing an MPH, my advice is to take advantage of every opportunity to learn and grow. Engage with your professors and classmates, as they can provide valuable insights and support. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and explore new areas of public health. Stay focused on your goals and persevere through challenges, as the field of public health is demanding but also incredibly rewarding.
