Study: Smokers, Ex-Smokers at Greater Risk for Mobility, Musculoskeletal and Psychological Issues in Old Age
Smokers and former smokers who survive into old age are at a heightened risk for non-life threatening ailments that can reduce quality of life and expand the need for health services, according to a cohort study led by Benjamin A. Shaw, UAlbany associate professor in the School of Public Health.

New “Metaliteracy” MOOC Explores Information Literacy in the Social Media Age
University Libraries and the Center for Distance Learning at Empire State College have collaborated to offer a new Massive Open Online Course, Metaliteracy MOOC. Metaliteracy will empower learners beyond the search and retrieval of static documents to the collaborative production and sharing of dynamic information online.

Atmospheric Scientist Scott Miller to Study Adirondack Lake for Inland Water Impact on Climate Change
UAlbany atmospheric scientist Scott Miller is co-principal investigator of a study at the Cranberry Lake Biological Station in the Adirondack Mountains aimed at identifying and quantifying several processes that affect emission of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere and how these can be expected to shift due to climate change.

The University at Albany inaugurated its 19th President, Robert J. Jones, Ph.D., on Sept. 28. Dr. Jones was formally installed at a ceremony in the University's Performing Arts Center. He outlined his vision for UAlbany in an inaugural address before a packed theater of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community and business leaders.
