Partnering with Local Schools to Create Educational Web Pages

by Jenifer Kish (January 30, 2006)

The Department of Information Studies in the new College of Computing and Information Dec. 6 presented the Fall 2005 Web Development for Education Symposium: An Authentic Multimedia Collaborative Learning Model. Assistant Professor Joette Stefl-Mabry's graduate students in IST 523L (Technology and School Library Media) and Instructor William Doane's undergraduate students in IST 361 (Web Technology) presented their Multimedia Curriculum projects and assessment results.

Throughout the semester, graduate and undergraduate students collaborated with one another as well as with teachers and school library media specialists from local school districts to design, create, and assess the success of developmentally appropriate multimedia experiences for K-12 students. Problem-based project teams were formed based upon real-world, multimedia curricula needs as requested by the University's K-12 learning partners. The final products were interactive Web sites and posters depicting the projects. Students presented highlights of project goals and objectives. New York State, American Library Association (ALA), and International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards were incorporated into each project. In addition, a literature review and substantiation for technology and academic elements were included. Measures of assessment and results, Web design features, and future recommendations were also integral to the projects.

In an effort to create and foster University-community collaborative partnerships, University at Albany students work with different schools each semester on multimedia collaborative projects. Proposals from local school districts may be submitted to Stefl-Mabry ([email protected] or (518) 442-5120) for consideration.

2005 PARTNER SCHOOLS WERE: Montessori Magnet School, North Albany Academy, Stephen & Harriet Myers Middle School, C.J. Hooker Middle School, Philip Livingston Magnet Academy, and Thomas O'Brien Academy of Science & Technology. The projects may be viewed online at http://webhelp.albany.k12.ny.us/suny/.
