UAlbany Students Set New Record in Library
Use
The main University Library kept its doors open around the clock from 1 a.m. Dec. 13 to Dec. 21, offering extended hours to students during the final exam period for the first time.
During these extended hours, there were 74,021 total passes through the gates. For the same period in spring 2006, the University Library gate total was 52,126, an increase of about 30 percent. A new record was set on Sunday night, Dec. 17, when more than 1,300 students passed through the main University Library entrance between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m.
As they stayed awake longer, students consumed more coffee. Library officials report that students consumed 45 free gallons of java (720 cups) during the extended hours.
Laptop usage jumped as well. The 12 laptops at the University Library were circulated 288 times, from the time the library began lending them Nov. 15 through the end of the regular semester Dec. 12. During the eight-day final exam period, usage almost doubled, with the same 12 laptops circulating 277 times.
