Visiting Professor Patricia Mohammed

The University at Albany is bringing Patricia Mohammed, a visiting professor from the University of the West Indies, Trinidad, to campus this fall.

Mohammed, a visiting professor of gender and development studies, will be on campus as part of a year-old partnership between the two universities to foster student and faculty exchanges between UAlbany and the three campuses of the University of the West Indies in Jamaica, Trinidad, and Barbados.

"Provost and Officer in Charge Susan Herbst and Joan Wick-Pelletier, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, are leading by example in terms of UAlbany's push towards increased internationalization and diversity," said Glyne A. Griffith, chair of the Department of Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies (LACS), and an associate professor with a joint appointment in the Department of English. "Having provided significant funding for Pat Mohammed's visit, they have made it possible for one of the leading Caribbean scholars of gender and development studies in the English-speaking Caribbean to lend her expertise to our curriculum during the fall 2007 semester."

Griffith, who earned his Ph.D. from the University of the West Indies, Mona campus, Jamaica, added, "The visit is also important for LACS and the Department of Women's Studies, as both departments will effectively enhance their Caribbean studies' offerings at UAlbany because of Pat's visit."

According to Griffith, UAlbany students are increasingly interested in studying abroad, and faculty exchanges enhance this experience. This summer, for example, two LACS faculty members, Patricia Pinho and Fernando Leiva, are taking a group of UAlbany students to Brazil and Chile, respectively, for six weeks.

Mohammed will teach The Philosophy of Gender in Caribbean Thought (LCS 330/WSS 399) from 5:45 to 8:35 p.m. on Wednesdays this fall. Her graduate course is Imaging the Caribbean: Culture and Visual Translation (LCS 599/WSS 599) on Mondays from 5:45 to 8:35 p.m.

Mohammed's semester visit is a result of the efforts of Griffith, Chris Bose, chair of Women's Studies, and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Joan Wick-Pelletier. Their initiative engendered a collaborative agreement among the College of Arts and Sciences, the Office of the Provost and Officer in Charge, the Department of Women's Studies, UAlbany's Office of International Education, and the Office of International Education at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine campus, Trinidad.
