ALBANY, N.Y. (September 1, 2005) - University at Albany President Kermit L. Hall today announced the establishment of the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. The relief effort will forward 100 percent of funds raised to various relief organizations, including the American Red Cross and the Northeast Regional Food Bank/America's Second Harvest.
"Exceptional suffering demands exceptional caring," said President Hall. "The circumstances in New Orleans and surrounding areas offer yet another opportunity for the University at Albany community to live up to that standard. I am thrilled that we are doing so."
The relief organizations were selected based on their proven track record for dealing with natural disasters and on the various needs of those affected by the hurricane. Financial support is crucial in targeting relief efforts in the most efficient manner and directly where it's needed most.
In addition, University Auxiliary Services, the not-for-profit corporation that provides quality of life services for students such as dining, banking, and book store facilities, announced that it will match all funds raised through the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund.
"Our students are enormously compassionate and giving, and we believe that corporate social responsibility is vital in efforts such as this," said UAS Executive Director Julia Filippone. "We're happy to do our part and help these exceptional students provide relief to the stricken areas."
Donations will be accepted through September 20, 2005, in the Campus Center, some residence halls and a few other designated areas on campus. You can also mail a check or money order made payable to UAS-Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund to:

In addition to relief aid, UAlbany has offered to assist college students whose academic plans have been disrupted by the devastation on the Gulf Coast. The University will allow for flexibility in admissions procedures, tuition and other financing, and scheduling to expedite the applications of these "visiting students."
Classes began on Monday, August 29, and the Office of General Studies has already enrolled several visiting students for the fall semester and is making arrangements to accommodate others as requests are received.
Students or families affected by the hurricane who wish to discuss admission to the University at Albany should contact the Office of General Studies at (518) 442-5140. The office is located in Room 110 of the Social Science building on the uptown campus.
UAlbany is one of several National Association
of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges
(NASULGC) members who have rallied around
this relief effort to help victims rebuild
their lives and communities.
