Background:
Established by UAlbany President Kermit L.
Hall on taking office in February 2005, the
Inaugural Scholarship Fund provides
need- and merit-based undergraduate
scholarships. The fund was jump-started with
$100,000 that would have been spent on a
presidential inauguration. Instead of a
formal ceremony, Hall directed that the
money be used to establish the Inaugural
Scholarship Fund and, with his wife Phyllis,
personally pledged an additional $10,000
toward it. The fund awarded its first
scholarships in 2006, and currently stands
at $1.7 million.
