Contact: Catherine Herman (518) 437-4980

ALBANY, N.Y. (May 10, 2006) -- Professor Bruce Svare of the Department of Psychology has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar Grant to lecture at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand, during the 2006-07 academic year. Svare will teach behavioral neuroscience in the Chulalongkorn doctoral program in psychology, and will assist with curriculum development in the Thai higher education system.

Svare, a UAlbany faculty member for more than 25 years, is a professor of psychology and neuroscience, and director of the National Institute for Sports Reform, a not-for-profit organization that serves as a think tank, research center, and advocate for sports reform. He has authored more 70 scientific papers in leading professional journals and written numerous books and book chapters in the field of behavioral neuroscience. He served on the National Institute on Drug Abuse Technical Review Panel on Steroid Abuse and has been a recipient of research grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Science Foundation, National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute on Aging, and the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation.

Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the Fulbright Scholar program's purpose is to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries. Over its 58 years of existence, thousands of U.S. faculty and professionals have studied, taught, or done research abroad, and thousands of their counterparts from other countries have engaged in similar activities in the United States. The Fulbright Scholar program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars.
