Global Climate Change
Consumption of fossil fuel, biomass and biofuel, and forest fires introduce copious amounts of nanosize black carbon particles into our atmosphere. These black carbon particles strongly absorb sunlight causing heating of the atmosphere, altering global cloud cover affecting changes in global climate. When inhaled by humans black carbon particles cause cardiopulmonary disease.
Black carbon particles in the northeastern US, and in the Arctic Circle.
Black carbon particles when they accumulate on ice and snow they can initiate melting of the snow and ice. Our measurements have shown that model which estimate the effect on climate from black carbon are using black carbon concentrations which are much lower, as much as one-fourth of the measured concentrations. We are in the process of conducting measurements in many locations around the world so that an accurate impact on global climate can be assessed.
