Recent International Conferences
UCRN has brought urban China specialists together at several conferences beginning in 1999. These events provide special opportunities for younger scholars to meet more senior colleagues, and for people from different academic disciplines to share ideas and perspectives.
- UCRN is organizing its 2023 conference in Beijing with Peking University. The theme of the conference is “Livable Cities for All: Re-imagining Urban China Research” (Oct. 28-29). - The Urban China Research Network held a conference at Brown University on May 8-9, 2015. Similar to the conference that we held in Albany in 2014, this conference is based on papers presented by current doctoral students -- from various countries and disciplines. A total of 13 papers have been selected competitively by the UCRN advisory board. For more information, click here.

- Urban China Research Network sponsored a conference entitled "International Conference on Contemporary Urban China Research" The conference was held in Albany during May 9-10, 2014. For more information, click here.

- Urban China Research Network co-sponsored a conference entitled “International Conference on China’s Urban Transformation and Restructuring.” The conference was held in Guangzhou during Dec. 13-15, 2013. Following UCRN board members participated in this conference: Kam Wing Chan, Debra Davis, Eric Fong, Chaolin Gu, Si-ming Li, Zai Liang, John Logan, Kristin Stapleton, Fulong Wu, and Weiping Wu. UCRN Co-Director John Logan delivered a keynote speech on the first day of the conference. UCRN also held a board meeting on Dec. 15 to plan for future activities.
- International Conference on Contemporary Urban China Research: Fostering the Next Generation of Urban China Scholars, 4-6 January,2013 Guangzhou. This conference was co-organized for UCRN by the University at Albany and the Sun Yat-sen University Departments of Anthropology and Sociology. It featured presentations by graduate students in these two departments following in the tradition of previous Albany-Sun Yat-sen projects. It was supported by a grant from Lingnan Foundation and by Sun Yat-sen University and the University at Albany. For more information, click here.
- More than 35 participants were being partly supported through UCRN, including many former grant recipients and members of the International Advisory Board. A reception for all attendees was being sponsored by UCRN.
- International Conference on Spatial & Social Transformation in Urban China, 13-14 December, Hong Kong. This conference was being held at Hong Kong Baptist University with major support from the Centre for China Urban and Regional Studies and the David C. Lam Institute for East-West Studies at HKBU. Additional support was provided by other institutions including Brown University and the University of Hong Kong's Centre of Urban Studies and Urban Development.
- Cities after Socialism was organized at Brown University (Providence, February 2012).
- International Conference On Contemporary Urban Research: Social Science Perspectives From China And North America included presentations by graduate students from Sun Yat-sen University, with commentary and participation by advisory board members (Albany, May 2010).
